Scott Black

Scott Black is a professional jazz bassist and jazz historian. He has lived in Tucson since 2002 and quickly became one of our busiest jazz musicians and co-founded the nationally acclaimed, multi- award winning Tucson Jazz Institute – a world-class jazz music school producing the finest future jazz stars. After graduating from Indiana University, he worked in NYC for 6 years and then moved to Chicago which became his home for 20 years until the Tucson sunshine called out “Come, come.” His ownership and educational role in the Tucson Jazz Institute (TJI) has been transformative. TJI has become one of the most recognized and awarded jazz schools in the United States.

Scott started with Pima CC this fall. The Spring Semester he will also be teaching Jazz Improvisation on Wednesday evenings. The class is open to all instruments and will focus on learning the Barry Harris method of playing eight note lines that spell chords. This is the technique that almost all jazz musicians have used since the 1950s. Scott was the bass player in Barry Harris’s jazz workshop rhythm section in 1982.
