Abby Maki

Coming from an advanced photography background I was intrigued by the PCC photography program because of its darkroom courses. Having never been able to experience shooting on film or developing my own photos by hand, I wanted to expand my knowledge within the field.

Black and White film photography has since become one of my favorite forms of artistic expression because of its unique qualities of physical manipulation and the outcome of one kind prints.

During my final semester at PCC, I was given the amazing opportunity to be an artist contributor at the 2024 EGTSS 8th Annual Summit, with keynote speaker and National Geographic photographer Ami Vitale. Her inspiring conversation about her life and imagery struck close to home. I had always thought that being an introverted person would hold me back within the artist community, but as Ami stated it allows one to be a keen observer, and in turn a more powerful photographer with a sense of self.

The experiences I've had as a PCC Visual Arts student will always remain with me. The support of my photography professor, Anh-Thuý Nguyễn, and her teachings of Fine Art Photography, have shown me the possibilities of an artistic career, something I had thought unachievable for myself. From building a resume and portfolio to showing work in exhibitions, the PCC Photography program gave me the tools needed to pursue higher levels of art and the confidence to succeed.
